Then a very bad thing happened. Some humans came in and looked at all the puppies. They had Louis get my sister out of the cage. They took her away and never brought her back. I knew that I wanted to die. I lay down in my cage. I could no longer eat. I would die. Meanwhile, in another town, an old fox terrier died. The people thought they would not have another dog, but after two weeks,they began to look for another fox terrier. There were none to be found anywere. Nobody, not even the kennel clubs could find a breeder of Smooth Fox Terriers.
Then, one day, everything began to happen. The woman prayed "If we are to have another Fox Terrier Father, please bring it to us". That night she went to the hairdressers and her husband went with her. When the got there they found that the hairdresser was sick, and the shop had been unable to contact her at work. Because her husband felt ill, they went to dinner rather than having someone else do her hair.
After dinner, she wanted to stop at a store near the pet shop. Hoping to make the man feel better, she suggested they visit the pet store so he could look at the exotic birds. (Pepper's Narative Resumed) Alot of people came and looked at the puppies. I just lay in my cage. I would die. After what seemed like a long time, I saw a man standing in front of the glass doors staring at me. He turned his head and called to someone. A woman came running back to the man. She pointed at me and said something. I knew that she was telling the man that she didn't want me.
Then she ran to the front of the store. She brought Louis back with her and pointed at me again. I thought she was telling him to get rid of me. No one wanted me, anyway. Louis got me out of my cage. I wanted to die. He brought me out and the woman reached for me. Suddenly I knew I had found my mom. She laughed and the man said "Do you want her?" The woman said "Of course, do you?"
The man looked at Louis and asked "How much?" and Louis told him. They laughed and said "We will need some puppy food, a bed, harness, lead, and toys". We picked out all of these things, and they carried me out to their car.
At last, I was going home.
The morning after we were born was a happy day. I remember hearing the humans saying "Happy New Year" to everyone.
My mother and sisters and I were very happy together. Mom fed us and played with us all the time, and, when we got tired, we curled up with her and had a nice sleep.
Everything was fine, until one day when the humans put my sister and me in the car and drove to a place where there were all kinds of animals. The big white bird scared us when it screamed. The other dogs barked at us.
A man called Louis looked us over and told our humans he would take us. We were realy afraid. Then Louis put us in a cage and he and our human left. Our human never came back. Louis and the other humans were nice to us. They talked to us, gave us water and a new kind of food that we didn't like very much.
Then someone came and made us drink something nasty that they said was for worms and stuck us with a needle. A few days later they put us in another cage, in a room with other cages that had different kinds of puppies in them, and glass doors. My sister and I called out and Louis came running back but when he saw us he said we were all right and told the other humans not to worry.
